Review Text

  • By Christopher Arnison on 28 September 2009

As facsimile reprints go, this is pretty terrible. First, the reprint is seven-eights the original size, yet the verso of the title page says the original is 7 inches wide by 9.75 inches deep - roughly the size of the reprint itself - whereas the original is actually 10 inches wide and 13 inches deep. This leads to a misdescription of the frontispiece as 'actual size' when it is greatly reduced. Furthermore the frontispiece and the 62 plates (which are the chief interest of the book nowadays) are very badly printed - heavily over-inked so that the essential detail is blurred and sometimes completely lost.Certainly the original book is important enough to be made accessible, and also now very expensive (about £500 at least) even if you can find one of the 200 printed. In which case it's also important to do it properly!
