Judge Russell (John Drinker Russell, 1911?1996) guided Menlo College students for nearly sixty years as instructor, registrar, director of admissions, director of the College, director of the School of Business Administration, and director emeritus. The scope of Russell?s professional and personal relationships can be seen in the Menlo College Archive, which includes approximately 1,100 items of Judge Russell correspondence ? chiefly letters sent to him by students and alumni. The letters span nearly six decades, from the early 1940s through the mid-1990s. This essay presents the most important themes and the most interesting highlights of that correspondence, describing the work of Judge Russell within a small college community devoted to the academic achievement, career success, and personal well-being of students.
